About UGC-NET/JRF:
The National Educational Testing Bureau of University Grants Commission (UGC) conducts National Eligibility Test (NET) to determine eligibility for lectureship and for award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) for Indian nationals in order to ensure minimum standards for the entrants in the teaching profession and research. The Test is conducted in Humanities (including languages), Social Sciences, Forensic Science, Environmental Sciences, UGC-NET Computer Science and Applications and Electronic Science.
About Joint UGC-CSIR-NET/JRF:
The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) conducts the CSIR-UGC-NET for Science subjects, namely, CSIR-UGC-NET/JRF Physical Sciences, UGC-CSIR-NET/JRF Chemical Science, Life Sciences, Mathematical Sciences and Earth Atmospheric Ocean and Planetary Sciences jointly with the UGC. The Exam conducted jointly with the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi. The concerned notification are issued separately by CSIR.

Examination Scheme for Joint UGC-CSIR-NET/JRF:
Single paper test having Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) is divided in three parts A, B and C.

Age Limit and Relaxation:
For JRF (NET): Maximum 28 years.
Upper age limit may be relaxed up to 5 years in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC (As per GOI central list), Physically handicapped/Visually handicapped and female applicants.
For Lectureship (NET): No upper age limit.
Minimum Educational Qualification for NET/JRF:
BS-4 years program / B.E./ B.Tech / B.Pharma / MBBS / IntegratedBS-MS / M.Sc./ MCA / M.Tech or Equivalent degree with at least 55% marks for General & OBC candidates 50% for SC/ST candidates,Physically and Visually handicapped candidates.
Note: Candidate enrolled for M.Sc. or having completed 10+2+3 years of the above qualifying examination are also eligible to apply in the above subject under the Result Awaited (RA) category on the condition that they complete the qualifying degree with requisite percentage of marks within the validity period of two years to avail the fellowship from the effective date of award. Such candidates will have to submit the attestation format (Given at the reverse of the application form) duly certified by the Head of the Department/Institute from where the candidate is appearing or has appeared.
B.Sc. (Hons) or equivalent degree holders or students enrolled in integrated MS-Ph.D. program with atleast 55% marks for General and OBC candidates; 50% for SC/ST candidates, Physically and Visually handicapped candidates are also eligible to apply.
Candidates with bachelor’s degree, whether Science, engineering or any other discipline, will be eligible for fellowship only after getting registered/enrolled for Ph.D./integrated Ph.D. program within the validity period of two years.
NET/JRF Exam Schedule:
UGC conducts NET twice a year, i.e., in the months of June and December. The notifications announcing the June and December examinations are published in the months of February/March and August/September respectively in the weekly journal of nation-wide circulation, viz, Employment News.
Scholarship:
The scholarship of the JRF (NET) fellowship, at present, is 31,000/- (+HRA) per month.
The fellowship will be governed by terms and conditions of CSIR, UGC or Research Scheme, as applicable. The number of fellowships for each subject is limited. SC/ST applicants will be given such special considerations as may be decided by the Co-ordination Committee as per policy guidelines.
The duration of fellowship will be initially for 2 years carrying a monthly stipend of 31,000/-. On completion of two years as JRF (NET), the stipend of a fellow may be increased to 35,000/-p.m. for the 3rd year on the basis of assessment of candidate’s research progress through interview by the prescribed Expert Committee and Ph.D. registration. Upon such a recommendation, the fellow will be called SRF (NET). The total tenure as JRF (NET) plus SRF (NET) shall not exceed 5 years.

Step I: Minimum marks to be obtained in NET for considering a candidate for the award of JRF and eligibility for lectureship.
Step II: Amongst those candidates who have cleared step I, a merit list will be prepared subject-wise and category-wise using the aggregate marks of all the three papers secured by such candidates.
Step III: Top 15% candidates (for each subject and category), from the merit list mentioned under step II, will be declared NET qualified for eligibility for lectureship only.
Step IV: A separate merit list for the award of JRF will be prepared from amongst the NET qualified candidates figuring in the merit list prepared under step III. It may be noted that the above qualifying criteria decided by UGC is final and binding.
UGC-CSIR-NET/JRF Results Declaration Schedule:
The result of June, UGC-NET is declared generally in the month of September. Similarly December, UGC-NET result is usually declared in the month of March.
